This old map of Bristol in 1750 is another masterpiece created by John Rocque, who surveyed, drew and published this map.
Around the edge of the map are 10 engravings of famous Bristol landmarks - or at least, they were important landmarks in 1750! This is a lovely map from a time when many of Bristol's historic streets had already been laid down, but the town itself was still quite small and rural. If you've ever wanted to see the Exchange of Bristol from all four elevations in 1750, this is the map for you.
This map looks great at all sizes: 12x16 inches (31x41cm), 18x24 inches (45.5x61cm) and 24x36 inches (61x91.5cm), but it looks even better when printed large
I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 52x70in (132x178cm). Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x18 inch (60x45cm) version of this map.
The rivers, wharfs and quays take centre stage in this map. The Avon and Frome (or Froom back then!) rivers are clearly visible, as is Wapping. Queen's Square (which has since lost its possessive) dominates central Bristol.
Brandon Hill is here - but in 1750 it was surrounded by fields still! Many parts of central Bristol like Kingsdown and Lewin's Mead are here - but in 1750 they were actually meads and downs!
This would make a wonderful birthday, work leaving, housewarming, Christmas or Father's Day gift for someone from Bristol or who has west country in their heart.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
